Safari and the Bandia Reserve / Senegal

Once you are in Senegal, you must not miss the Bandia Nature Reserve.

Located only 65 km from Dakar and 15 km from the seaside resort of Saly, the Bandia Reserve is a must see during your stay in Senegal. The park stretches over 3,500 hectares, of which 1,500 hectares are available to visitors. During a two-hour visit which covers 50 km you will get to see numerous species of fauna and flora. Mostly you will see various kinds of ungulates, such as zebras, giraffes, buffalos and several antelope varieties, among them, the Derby antelope – the largest of the antelopes. Besides this, you will have the opportunity to look closely at rhinos, crocodiles, land turtles, monkeys and hyenas. There are over 120 species of birds in the reserve that delight with their beautiful singing and bright colors. You will also find lush nature in the park and many species of trees, of which the most amazing are the giant African baobabs.

After crossing the territory, you need to buy a ticket and rent a safari car (mandatory during the rainy season, optional during the rest of the year). During the visit, you will be accompanied by a guide and driver. From my personal experience, the whole trip was very pleasant, despite the sometimes bumpy road, which kept us shaking and avoiding long branches that liked to try to get into the car (sometimes I had to lower my head). The most surprising for me was the close contact with the animals, especially with the giraffes. These animals often approached our car. There are 40 giraffes in the park. For me, the giraffe is the most beautiful African animal and I would certainly call it “the queen of animals”. In addition to its splendor and very long neck, the giraffe can easily deal with a lion by kicking it with one of their powerful hooves. Interestingly, the giraffe’s pregnancy period is 15 months!

In the reserve, I was able to see other animals such as zebras, buffalo, antelopes and rhinoceroses. I only missed seeing elephants, which unfortunately you will not see in the park.

At the end of your visit, be sure to go to the restaurant in the park. This is definitely a place worth stopping and relaxing as you are serenaded by the amazing singing of birds! There is a lagoon near the restaurant, and hundreds of small birds build their nests around it. What a view! Here, you will also see terrifying crocodiles!

Practical tips:

the park is open from 8 am to 6 pm. The guides say the animals are more active in the morning. So it is worthwhile to come early.

tickets:

Adults 12,000 FCFA (18 euro)

Children 7000 FCFA (10euro)

Apart from this:

You will be charged a fee of 10,000 FCFA (15 euro) if you use your own car, 40,000 FCFA (60 euro) for a rented car for up to 11 people, and 60000 FCFA (90 euro) for a car for up to 25 people. You must also pay an obligatory guide 6500 FCFA (approximately 10 euro). So the best way to go to the park is with a group, then the costs are spread out. If you are alone, it is worth going to the park in the morning (there is a high probability that there will be more people and you will be able to create or join a group).
